Dear Beef Producers,

Welcome to the Hazeldean Northern Performance Bull Sale for 2017.

This year’s draft of bulls continues our commitment to Queensland beef producers established in 1994 when we sent our first consignment of bulls up north. Back in 1994 many stud breeders thought Queensland producers didn’t care much about performance or quality and as long as bulls were black, had 4 legs and 2 testicles that was all that mattered. We had trouble following that sort of thinking. Our commitment was, and continues to be, to provide the same high standard of bulls to northern cattle breeders as we do to our southern clients.

Despite the more extensive scale of operations in the north, a lot of Queensland beef producers are vitally interested in performance data and even in the early days many were very much aware of performance and where our bulls lay with regard to Angus breed average. Indeed, I would have to say that I have had more interesting and in depth conversations with Queensland producers on cattle breeding, EBVs and overall performance than I have had with southern clients

In 1994 the Angus breed was only very new in the north and many producers were uncertain as to how they would survive and work in the Queensland rangeland environment. In those early years bull prices were certainly subdued when compared to the south however with the passage of time we have witnessed growing confidence in our bulls and the results they bring.

The beef industry is certainly on a roll at the present time and seems to have hit a new level of sustainability without prices going completely mad. Drought still impacts on many Queensland producers and we just hope this summer brings the long awaited big wet season however the value of what we produce is now as good as it has ever been.

Finally, my introduction letter this year would not be complete without mentioning how sad we were to hear of Ella Robinsons passing. Those that have attended the sale at Pinora, Jackson would not have left without being impressed by Ellas courage, charm, dignity and old fashioned bush friendship. She was straightforward and ran the sale as if it were her own. We extend our sympathy to John and the family.

Hazeldean's outstanding Calving Ease
Hazeldean has been selecting for calving ease for more than 30 years - our heifers calve down easily with only a handful of the more than 400 calving heifers having any sort of difficulty. Any female who has problems calving for whatever reason is culled from the herd. Calving difficulties are not much fun to deal with and a live calf is worth a hell of alot more than a dead one! Calving ease and reproduction is the cornerstone of any successful herd.

Hazeldean sire's exceptional performance in Angus Australia Sire Benchmarking Programme

The progeny of Hazeldean sires NHZF493 and NHZF1023 part of cohort 3 of the AA sire benchmarking programme have performed exceptionally well, in all traits including calving ease, growth, and particularly carcase– Out of progeny from 40 sires F1023 progeny ranked 1st for carcase IMF and 2nd for MSA index and F493 progeny were ranked 3rd, 2nd and 4th for 200, 400 & 600 day weight, also performing at the top for carcase traits.
